“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4
For years I have read this verse. It once meant that as long as I asked for “good” things like marriage and family then He would grant me those desires. I knew very little what ‘Delight yourself in the Lord’ meant, therefore I found myself just passing over that part. God is good and never fails to provide, but I recently found myself being very angry with Him, something I’ve never experienced before. I cried out to Him, “Where are You? Why aren’t You showing up? Why haven’t You given me what I’ve asked for?” If I am to be honest with myself I would say I have not been delighting myself in the Lord. You may wonder what I think that means at this point. Taking delight in the Lord means that our hearts truly find peace and fulfillment in Him.
Two verses opened my eyes to this Truth.
“I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your law is within my heart.” Psalm 40:8
“For I delight in the Law of God, in my inner being.” Romans 7:22
As I cling to this truth I find myself filtering my decisions in life by what He directs in His Word. I often asked others, “When is my life going to start?” By this I meant, when am I going to be married and have children. As I learn His character on a more intimate level, as my Leader and Partner, I find my life has already begun. He came to give us life, and that life in abundance. You just have to be in His arms to receive it.
